If you only require EFR, this is a shorter and more cost-effective standalone module. A dive medical from a Koh Tao clinic typically costs between 500–1,500 THB, depending on the clinic, and can usually be completed the same day.

The 40 logged dives requirement is something that catches more candidates than expected. If you are arriving with 25 dives in your logbook from a previous trip, you will need an additional 15 dives before starting your Divemaster training. Our 10-dive fun diving package (10,000 THB) is the most cost-effective way to build your experience while enjoying the best dive sites around Koh Tao.

You will also need dive insurance, which we explain in more detail further down the page. In addition, if you have been out of the water for 12 months or more, we strongly recommend completing a refresher before beginning your training. Two Scuba Review dives (2,200 THB) is a small investment compared to starting your Divemaster feeling out of practice.

Living on Koh Tao for 12 Weeks – Real Numbers

An IDC alone typically runs for around two weeks. A full pathway from Divemaster Internship through to Instructor usually takes approximately three months, while the MSDT pathway adds an additional two to three weeks on top.

In reality, most professional candidates spend eight to twelve weeks living on Koh Tao, and it’s very common for stays to become extended or unplanned as candidates continue training, build experience, or secure scuba diving jobs after certification. This period of living costs therefore becomes one of the biggest variables when planning your overall budget.

Accommodation is where the price range varies the most. A clean fan room in areas such as Sairee or Mae Haad can typically be found for 8,000 to 12,000 THB per month, especially if you book directly and commit to a longer stay.

A mid-range air-conditioned studio apartment usually ranges from 12,000 to 18,000 THB per month, while a private bungalow with a kitchen and sea view can range from 20,000 to 30,000 THB per month.

Most candidates who overspend on Koh Tao tend to do so on accommodation—often by booking nightly rates instead of negotiating monthly pricing.

Food costs are far more flexible and easy to manage. A typical Thai meal at a local restaurant costs between 80 and 150 THB, while coffee in a Western-style café is around 80 to 120 THB. A Western meal with a drink averages 300 to 600 THB.

If you cook at home occasionally, a weekly grocery shop will cost approximately 2,000 to 4,000 THB. A realistic monthly food budget for someone eating mostly Thai food with occasional Western meals is around 12,000 to 18,000 THB.

Transport on the island is simple but worth factoring in. A motorbike rental costs approximately 3,000 to 4,000 THB per month, with fuel adding around 500 THB per month.

Many candidates choose to live close to their dive centre and rely on walking, reducing transport costs to under 1,000 THB per month. Additional monthly expenses such as laundry, drinking water, and mobile data typically add a few hundred Baht.

Overall, a realistic monthly living budget for a comfortable—but not excessive—lifestyle on Koh Tao is 30,000 to 45,000 THB.

For a three-month training period, this equates to approximately 90,000 to 135,000 THB in total living expenses.

PADI iE Presentations

Visas, Travel, and the Bits That Add Up

Most Western nationalities receive a 60-day visa exemption stamp on arrival in Thailand, which can usually be extended once at a local immigration office for 1,900 THB. A visa run typically costs 4,000 to 8,000 THB depending on which border crossing and whether you organise it yourself or use an agent.

International flights vary so widely by origin and season that I will not put a number on them, but factor in a return international flight, a domestic flight or train from Bangkok to Chumphon or Surat Thani, and the ferry from the mainland to Koh Tao.

The ferry is 600 to 900 THB one way depending on which company you use. But it is a real cost that arrives soon after certification.

There are also the upsells. Once you are settled into the dive industry, you will be tempted by Sidemount, by Tec, by Rebreather, by underwater photography or Marine Conservation. Be honest with yourself about which is which when you are looking at the price tag.

The MSDT Question – Should You Budget for It Now?

I get this question constantly: ‘Should I do my MSDT right after my IDC, or wait?’ My answer is almost always: do it now, while you are already on Koh Tao, already in the rhythm of training, and already paying living costs anyway.

Here is why. A newly certified Open Water Scuba Instructor can teach the core PADI courses, but the MSDT rating opens up the ability to teach at least five additional specialty courses. This significantly increases your versatility as an instructor, and most dive centres around the world actively prefer to hire MSDT-rated professionals.

The 25,000 THB MSDT prep at IDC Koh Tao adds two to three weeks of focused training and places you in a far more employable position from the moment you complete your Instructor Examination. Rather than entering the job market as a newly qualified instructor competing with hundreds of others, you leave with a broader teaching portfolio, stronger experience, and a clear advantage when applying for scuba diving jobs in Thailand and internationally.

There is also a major benefit in continuing your training while you are still in a student mindset. At this stage, your skills are developing rapidly, your confidence is building, and you are fully immersed in learning. Extending straight into MSDT allows you to refine your teaching ability without interruption, rather than trying to pick it up again later while working.

During this phase, you will also gain invaluable experience through team teaching, where you work alongside experienced instructors on real courses. This gives you the opportunity to observe different teaching styles, ask questions, and lean on their experience while continuing to develop your own. Being able to absorb this knowledge in a supported training environment is something that becomes much harder once you are working independently.

If you wait and complete MSDT later in another location, you will likely pay more, lose the momentum you have already built, and have to fit further training around a working schedule rather than as a natural continuation of your development.

If your budget genuinely cannot stretch to it, that is a completely valid reason to wait. But if it can, it is one of the smartest investments you can make in your diving career—so it is worth factoring into your initial planning.

Almost every Instructor I have mentored who postponed their MSDT regretted not carrying on whilst they were here.

Kieran ‘Beard’ Hooley PADI Course Director in Thailand

How IDC Koh Tao’s Pricing Compares – And Why Cheapest Isn’t Always Cheapest

I am not going to name competitors. Koh Tao has a strong dive industry and most of the established Course Directors here run honest programmes. What I will tell you is what to look for when you are comparing quotes from any IDC centre, on Koh Tao or anywhere else.

First, look at what is included. A 35,000 THB IDC quote is not cheaper than a 41,900 THB IDC if the lower price excludes the Crew Pack, the pre-IDC, the materials fee, or dive equipment hire. Every IDC requires all of these components. The difference is whether they are included in the headline price or added later.

Second, look at the candidate-to-Course-Director ratio. A Course Director’s time is what you are actually paying for during an IDC. A programme with one Course Director and twelve candidates is a very different experience from one with four candidates, even if the headline price is similar. The level of individual feedback, coaching, and development will not be the same. Ask the question.

Third, look at the IE pass rate honestly. Every IDC centre will tell you their pass rate is high. Ask for specific, recent IE results if you want a real answer. The cost of failing your IE and having to re-sit is measured in re-training fees, re-examination fees, and an additional month of living costs on Koh Tao—easily 50,000 to 80,000 THB. A slightly more expensive IDC with a stronger preparation track record will almost always work out cheaper in the long run.

Fourth, and just as important, look at what happens after the IDC. Ask whether the dive centre hires from within its own professional training programmes. A centre that consistently develops and employs its own candidates is demonstrating confidence in the quality of its training. On the other hand, a dive shop that does not hire its own graduates should raise questions. If they are not willing to employ the instructors they have just trained, it is worth asking why.

Choosing an IDC is not just about getting certified—it is about positioning yourself for employment. Training in an environment where you are supported, developed, and potentially offered opportunities to stay and work adds real value that is not reflected in the initial course price.

Our full pricing is on our packages and prices page, and we are happy to put together a tailored breakdown for your specific situation if you want one.

A Final Word

If you have read this far, you are doing the homework right. Most candidates do not, and most candidates have at least one financial surprise during their training that a conversation like this one would have prevented.

Becoming a PADI Instructor is one of the more significant investments a person can make in a career change. It is also, in my view, one of the most rewarding. The candidates I see succeed are the ones who arrive with a clear-eyed financial plan, who have budgeted for the things their dive centre did not list, and who have not stretched themselves so thin that a single unexpected cost throws their entire training off track.

If you want a tailored cost estimate for your specific situation – your starting certification, your accommodation preferences, your timeline, whether you want Standard or Deluxe, whether MSDT makes sense for you – get in touch. I will reply personally and there is no obligation. You can also see our monthly IDC schedule for 2026 to start mapping your timeline.

However you go about it, do not choose your IDC by headline price alone. Choose it by what is actually included, by who is actually teaching it, and by where you actually want to be standing when you walk off your Instructor Examination. The financial difference between the cheapest option and the right option is usually less than one month of working as an Instructor afterwards.

Good luck. Wherever you train, train hard.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

Since I started mentoring PADI Professionals back in 2018,
