PADI Course Director Kieran Beard Hooley
Kieran ‘Beard’ Hooley is a PADI Platinum Course Director and PADI Instructor Trainer based on Koh Tao, Thailand, specialising in the development of confident, capable and employable PADI Professionals.
Having been involved in mentoring and teaching PADI Professionals since 2018, Beard has developed a reputation for delivering high-quality training focused not only on certification standards, but on producing divers and instructors who are calm, adaptable and genuinely comfortable in the water.
With extensive experience in recreational and professional diver education, he has worked with divers from around the world — guiding complete beginners through to Divemaster, Instructor and MSDT level certifications — while mentoring candidates toward successful careers throughout the global diving industry.

Early Diving Career
Having arrived on Koh Tao in early 2015, Beard embarked on his scuba diving journey at a young age, quickly realising that his future would be within the diving industry.
He completed his professional-level training under the leadership and guidance of PADI Platinum Course Director Matt Bolton, developing the foundations of his teaching philosophy and professional standards during his early years in the industry.
Following his professional training, Beard went on to work closely alongside Matt as Operations Manager within one of the busiest dive centers in the world, gaining extensive experience in diver training, large-scale dive operations, team leadership and professional development.
This progression from student to leadership-level management within a high-volume training environment helped shape his understanding of what it truly takes to become a capable and employable dive professional.
Professional Diving Background
Before focusing full-time on professional-level training and instructor development, Beard worked within large-scale dive operations, including serving as Operations Manager for one of the busiest dive centres in the world.
This operational background gives him a unique perspective on what makes a strong dive professional in real-world environments. His experience extends beyond teaching alone and includes dive logistics, team leadership, customer service standards, staff development and the day-to-day realities of running high-volume dive operations safely and efficiently.
Having worked closely with instructors, Divemasters and dive centre management teams, he understands the qualities dive employers look for when hiring professionals and incorporates those expectations directly into his training philosophy.
Professional Development Philosophy
Beard’s approach to diver education is heavily centred around confidence, control and practical application.
He places particular emphasis on neutral buoyancy, trim, situational awareness and in-water comfort — believing these to be some of the most important foundational skills a diver can develop early in their training.
Rather than teaching candidates to simply “pass a course,” his focus is on helping divers understand why skills matter, how to apply them in realistic situations and how to build long-term confidence underwater.
His teaching style is patient, adaptable and mentorship driven, allowing candidates to progress at a pace that promotes genuine understanding and mastery rather than rushed performance.
This philosophy has helped many of his Divemaster and Instructor candidates transition successfully into working dive professionals across Thailand and the wider international diving industry.
Over the years, Beard has mentored hundreds of divers and dive professionals, with many former candidates continuing on to successful international diving careers. Former students have gone on to manage and own dive centers, work in leadership roles throughout the industry and even work directly for PADI.
This long-term success of his former candidates reflects his focus on developing not just certified divers, but adaptable and capable professionals prepared for real careers within the diving industry.

Koh Tao provides an ideal environment for professional-level diver development, offering year-round diving conditions, varied training environments and exposure to real-world dive operations within a busy international dive community.
Through IDC Koh Tao, his goal is to provide high-quality professional training in an environment that is supportive, realistic and focused on long-term diver development rather than fast-track certifications.

Environmental Awareness & Diving Responsibility
Alongside professional diver training, Beard strongly promotes environmentally responsible diving practices and marine conservation awareness.
He believes that strong buoyancy control, diver awareness and proper in-water behaviour are essential not only for diver safety and comfort, but also for the long-term protection of marine ecosystems.
