PADI Instructor Examinations on Koh Tao
PADI IE (Instructor Examinations) in Thailand
After successfully completing all performance requirements of the PADI Instructor Development Course, you are just one final step away from becoming a certified PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. That final step is the PADI Instructor Examination (IE).
The IE is a two-day independent assessment conducted by PADI Examiners from PADI Asia Pacific. It is designed to evaluate your teaching ability, knowledge, and professionalism to ensure you meet the high global standards required of a PADI Instructor.
On Koh Tao, Instructor Examinations are every month throughout the year. These are timed to run immediately after the completion of the IDC, meaning there is a seamless transition from training into assessment. For example, following our structured 14-day IDC program, the IE begins on Day 15—keeping your knowledge fresh and your confidence high.
What to Expect During the PADI IE
The examination is structured to assess all key areas of instructor-level performance in a supportive and professional environment.
Day 1
- Orientation to the PADI Instructor Examination
- Systems, Standards, and Procedures Exam (90 minutes)
- Dive Theory Exams (90 minutes)
- Confined Water Teaching Presentations (pool session)
Day 2
- Knowledge Development Presentations (classroom)
- Open Water Teaching Presentations (local dive site)
- Final evaluation and PADI Instructor Examination closing ceremony
Throughout the IE, you will demonstrate your ability to teach effectively, apply PADI standards correctly, and maintain control and professionalism in both classroom and in-water environments. The focus is not just on knowledge, but on your ability to apply that knowledge in real teaching situations.
How We Prepare You for the IE
At IDC Koh Tao, preparing you for the PADI Instructor Examination is at the core of everything we do. Our entire IDC is structured around building the confidence, consistency, and professionalism required to perform at your best during the IE.
Through daily workshops, structured teaching practice, and detailed feedback sessions, you will continuously refine your performance across all areas of the assessment. We focus on repetition with purpose—ensuring you fully understand what is expected and how to deliver it confidently.
You will complete multiple practice presentations in Knowledge Development, Confined Water, and Open Water environments, all under the guidance of a PADI Platinum Course Director. We go significantly beyond the minimum PADI requirements, providing additional practice opportunities to ensure you build real confidence and consistency in your teaching. Each session is followed by detailed, constructive feedback, allowing you to improve quickly and develop a clear, professional teaching style.
We also place a strong emphasis on understanding—not memorising—the PADI system. This ensures that during the IE, you can adapt to different scenarios, think clearly under pressure, and apply standards accurately.
By the time you reach the Instructor Examination, nothing should feel unfamiliar. You will have already practiced, refined, and repeated each component, giving you the confidence to perform at a high level.
Proven Results & High Success Rates
Our approach to training is focused on consistent performance and real understanding, which is reflected in the strong results achieved by our candidates. IDC Koh Tao has built a reputation for producing confident, well-prepared instructors who perform to a high standard during the PADI Instructor Examination.
Our candidates consistently achieve high pass rates, with many completing the IE comfortably due to the level of preparation, coaching, and individual support they receive throughout the IDC. More importantly, they leave not only having passed the examination, but with the skills and confidence to begin working immediately as professional dive instructors.
The Final Step to Becoming a PADI Instructor
The PADI IE represents the culmination of your training and development. It is your opportunity to demonstrate everything you have learned and take the final step into your professional diving career.
And of course, once the hard work is done and you’ve successfully completed the examination, it’s time to celebrate. The PADI Instructor Examination closing ceremony is followed by the traditional IE party—marking the beginning of your new life as a certified PADI Instructor.
