BOOK ONLINEDiscover Scuba Diving & Explore The Underwater World on Koh Tao
Located at Black Turtle Dive dive centre, IDC Koh Tao is recognised throughout Asia Pacific as a leading diver training centre for non-divers, beginners and professional level candidates.
Our entry level Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) 1-day experience is an excellent way for you to explore the diverse marine environment surrounding Koh Tao, with one of our experienced PADI Diving Instructors.
Are you visiting Koh Tao and curious about scuba but don’t have the time or money to commit to a full PADI Open Water diver course?
The Discover Scuba Diving Experience is a great opportunity for you to try scuba diving in a single-day experience under the direct supervision of an experienced PADI Instructor. Your day begins in the morning with the PADI Discover Scuba Diving eLearning at our dive centre, moves into an extended session in our swimming pool, and finishes with two supervised open water ocean dives in the afternoon.
PADI Discover Scuba Diving eLearning
The PADI Discover Scuba Diving eLearning is a modern, interactive digital learning module that you complete on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. You can start it with us at the dive centre in the morning, or complete it in advance from home if you have already booked online.
The eLearning takes you through the fundamentals of scuba diving — including the effects of pressure underwater, how to equalise your air spaces, correct breathing techniques, and the essential safety concepts every new diver needs to understand. It also covers the PADI Diver Medical Questionnaire and Liability Release, both of which are completed digitally as part of the eLearning process.
Once completed, your instructor will review the key theory points with you at the dive centre and answer any questions before we head to the swimming pool.
Swimming Pool Training Session
The swimming pool is the ideal environment for your first breaths underwater. Calm, clear, and predictable, with no waves, currents, or reduced visibility, the pool lets you focus fully on your instructor and the skills you are learning.
Your instructor will assist you in setting up and fitting your scuba equipment before gradually introducing you to the water. You will begin in shallow water where you can stand comfortably with your head above the surface, breathing through the regulator to become familiar with the feeling of breathing underwater. Once ready, you will kneel under the water and start learning the core scuba skills.
Skills you will practise in the pool include:
- Breathing comfortably underwater
- Regulator clearing and regulator recovery
- Mask clearing
- Ear equalisation techniques
- Buoyancy Control Device (BCD) inflation and deflation at the surface
- Underwater hand signals and communication with your instructor
The extended morning session in the pool means there is no rush. You practise each skill at your own pace, ask any questions you have, and only move on when you feel completely ready.
Your Two Open Water Ocean Dives
After a lunch break, we head to the boat and travel to one of the shallow, sheltered reefs at one of Koh Tao’s many shallow bays for the highlight of the day: your two open water ocean dives.
Both ocean dives are conducted to a maximum depth of 12 metres / 40 feet, and both are under the direct supervision of your PADI Dive Instructor. Your first ocean dive gives you the chance to apply everything you practised in the pool in a real diving environment — breathing through the regulator, controlling your buoyancy, and swimming above the sand close to the reef.
Between dives you return to the boat for a surface interval, giving you time to debrief, rest, warm up, enjoy onboard refreshments, and share your experience before your instructor briefs you on your second dive.
Most divers find their second dive far more enjoyable than the first. With the initial nerves behind you, your breathing settles, your buoyancy improves, and you spend more of the dive looking around and taking in the reef. Average dive time is 30 to 40 minutes per dive depending on your air consumption.
Explore Koh Tao’s Beautiful Shallow Marine Life
The shallow reefs and sheltered bays around Koh Tao are one of the reasons the island has become one of the most popular first-dive destinations in the world. The water is warm, clear, and full of life, and the abundance of colourful marine life at these shallow depths means you do not need to go deep to see the very best of it.
During your two dives you will typically see butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, wrasses, groupers, moray eels, and clownfish nestled among their host anemones. Divers regularly encounter blue-spotted ribbontail rays resting on the sand, and if you are lucky, one of Koh Tao’s green or hawksbill sea turtles may join you for part of the dive.
Because everything is happening in the shallows, the reef is well-lit, the colours are vivid, and the visibility is at its best — the perfect environment for a first-time diver to fall in love with the underwater world.
BE WARNED! It Is Addictive
Most people who try scuba diving with us cannot stop and want more. Once you have felt what it is like to breathe underwater and explore a coral reef with your own eyes, it is very hard to go back to watching it from a screen or a snorkel. Do not say we did not warn you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Koh Tao Discover Scuba Diving experience?
The PADI Discover Scuba Diving program is an introduction to the world of scuba diving designed for anyone who has never dived before. It is a supervised, single-day experience program — not a certification course — that gives you a proper introduction to what scuba diving really feels like.
The day is structured across three sections. It begins with the PADI Discover Scuba Diving eLearning, which covers the basic theory of scuba diving including pressure, equalisation, breathing techniques, and safety. This is followed by an extended morning session in our swimming pool where your instructor introduces you to the equipment and the core scuba skills. In the afternoon, we head out on the boat for two open water ocean dives around one of Koh Tao’s famous shallow dive sites, to a maximum depth of 12 metres.
The Discover Scuba Diving program is perfect for anyone curious about scuba but not yet ready to commit to a full certification course, and for travellers who want to experience the underwater world around Koh Tao in a single day at excellent value.
How much does Discover Scuba Diving in Koh Tao cost?
The Discover Scuba Diving experience at IDC Koh Tao is priced at 4,400 THB per person as a single all-inclusive package. This includes your PADI Discover Scuba Diving eLearning, your full pool training session with a PADI Dive Instructor, two supervised open water ocean dives to a maximum depth of 12 metres, all scuba equipment, free use of a dive computer, and dive insurance.
There are no additional or hidden costs — the 4,400 THB covers everything you need for a complete Discover Scuba Diving day.
Is the Discover Scuba Diving experience in Koh Tao safe?
The Discover Scuba Diving experience is very safe. The pool session is the perfect place to build your confidence with the help of our highly trained instructors before ever entering the ocean. In the pool, the water is calm, clear, and predictable — the ideal environment to become comfortable breathing underwater and to practise your first scuba skills.
On both of your ocean dives you will be supervised at all times, in direct contact with your instructor, who will guide you around the reef and point out the marine life you encounter. The dives are conducted at shallow, sheltered reefs to a maximum depth of 12 metres, making Koh Tao one of the safest places in the world to breathe underwater for the very first time.
How many dives are there on the Discover Scuba Diving experience in Koh Tao?
The Discover Scuba Diving experience includes two supervised open water ocean dives, both to a maximum depth of 12 metres and both under the direct supervision of your PADI Dive Instructor. Both dives are included in the 4,400 THB package price with no additional charges.
Between the two dives you will return to the boat for a surface interval, where you debrief, rest, enjoy onboard refreshments, warm up, and receive a briefing from your instructor for your second dive.
Do I need to be able to swim to take the Koh Tao Discover Scuba Diving experience?
Being a strong swimmer is not a requirement to enrol in the Discover Scuba Diving experience, however you should be reasonably comfortable being in and around the water. The morning pool session is designed to help you build comfort and confidence at your own pace before entering the ocean.
If you are not the strongest swimmer, please let one of our staff know when booking. We can allocate additional time in the pool to help you become more familiar with the water environment. Full swimming lessons are also available for an additional cost if you would like a longer introduction to the water before your dive day.
Is the Koh Tao Discover Scuba Diving experience suitable for children?
The Discover Scuba Diving experience is available for anyone aged 10 years and above, making it a perfect way for younger participants to safely experience the underwater environment.
During your Discover Scuba Diving experience the maximum ratio is 2 students per instructor on your ocean dives, allowing your instructor to remain fully in control throughout each dive. For families with younger children, we can also run private one-to-one sessions on request.
Is the Koh Tao Discover Scuba Diving experience a certification?
No, the Discover Scuba Diving experience is an introductory program, not a certification course. On completion you do not receive a diver certification.
To dive again after your Discover Scuba Diving experience you have two options: complete another supervised Discover Scuba Diving session, or enrol in a full certification course such as the PADI Open Water Course — the most popular scuba certification in the world.
A key benefit is that your Discover Scuba Diving experience can be credited towards your PADI Open Water Diver course for up to 12 months after completion. This means you will not need to repeat the introductory pool and open water sections, allowing a smooth progression into the full certification whenever you are ready.
What will I see on the Koh Tao Discover Scuba Diving experience?
During your two ocean dives on Koh Tao you will typically see a wide variety of tropical marine life. Common sightings include butterflyfish, angelfish, parrotfish, wrasses, groupers, clownfish, and moray eels. Blue-spotted ribbontail rays are often seen resting on the sand near the reef.
If you are lucky, you may also be visited by one of Koh Tao’s green or hawksbill sea turtles — a highlight of any dive day and something many first-time divers list as the most memorable moment of their experience.
Is the Discover Scuba Diving experience in Koh Tao better than snorkeling?
The Discover Scuba Diving experience is a much better way to see Koh Tao’s marine life than snorkelling, for several reasons.
Being able to spend an extended period of time underwater at depth allows you to see a much wider range of marine life of all colours and sizes, at close range, in a more environmentally friendly way — without kicking coral or disturbing the surface.
Your PADI Instructor will also share knowledge of the underwater environment during your dive, pointing out species, behaviour, and facts about the reef that you would not get from the surface.
Are there any extra costs in the Koh Tao Discover Scuba Diving experience?
No, there are no extra costs in the Discover Scuba Diving experience at IDC Koh Tao. All scuba equipment, dive insurance, the PADI Discover Scuba Diving eLearning, your pool training session, and both ocean dives are included in the 4,400 THB package price.
Everything you need for a complete Discover Scuba Diving day is included — you simply need to arrive with a sense of adventure and the willingness to try something new.
